Elgin is the largest and most varied commercial market in the area we serve, with a downtown core, civic and institutional buildings, industrial premises and suburban retail. Accurate Commercial Doors supplies, installs and repairs storefront, glass, steel and fire-rated doors across all of them.
Most towns we serve have one dominant building type. Elgin has all of them within a few miles, which changes how a door company has to work here. A mill building, a downtown restaurant, a school and a strip center each need different products, different hardware and a different sequence of work.
What they share is the standard the work is held to. A door that does not close and latch properly is a defect whether it is an industrial service door or a shop entrance, and the diagnosis is the same process every time.
What the building type tells you about the door
Opening type is a reliable guide to what has gone wrong. Industrial service doors are damaged by equipment and fail at the frame and hinges. Downtown storefronts are adjusted repeatedly and fail at the closer and the alignment. Institutional doors are propped and fail at the closer and the latch. Retail entrances are cycled constantly and fail at pivots and thresholds.
Starting from the building rather than the symptom shortens the diagnostic work considerably, and it is why we ask what kind of premises a door is on before asking what it is doing.
- Storefront and entrance doors for retail, restaurant and service premises.
- Steel doors and hollow metal frames for industrial and back-of-house use.
- Glass doors, glazed partitions and sidelights.
- Wooden doors and rated assemblies for interiors, corridors and stairwells.
- Hardware: closers, hinges, pivots, thresholds, exit devices and locking.
Downtown and mixed-use buildings
In a downtown core, buildings are frequently mixed-use: commercial at street level, residential or office above, and a common entrance, corridor or stair serving all of it. That puts several different expectations on the same opening, because a tenant arriving with shopping and a customer arriving with a delivery need the same door to behave the same way.
The recurring fault in these buildings is a door that has been adjusted to suit one user group at the expense of another. A closer slowed down for residents will be held open by customers. A latch tightened for security becomes impossible for someone carrying anything. The durable answer is a correctly sized closer and a properly aligned opening.
Institutional and civic premises
Schools, places of worship, municipal buildings and community facilities are heavy door users with a wide range of people passing through. Doors there need to close reliably without requiring strength, to latch without being pushed, and to hold up when they are used by hundreds of people in a short period.
These buildings also carry a large number of rated doors, and the same faults recur: propped leaves, disconnected closers, missing or painted-over identification, and latches that no longer engage. Restoring those assemblies is routine work for us.
Industrial and warehouse openings
Elgin industrial premises produce the type of work that has nothing to do with appearance. Damaged service doors, racked frames, worn hinges, and personnel doors between production areas that have been propped since they were installed.
In these locations the repair decision is often commercial as much as technical. A dented steel door that still closes and latches is serviceable. One whose frame has been pushed out of line by an impact will keep failing until the frame is addressed, and it is worth being straight about which of those two situations a building is in.
Rated doors and code jurisdiction
A large share of the rated openings we work on are in Elgin, and the rule that governs them is not universal. Building and fire codes are adopted and amended state by state and enforced by the local authority, so the requirement for a given door depends on its address, occupancy and the rating of the wall it sits in.
Wisconsin and Illinois are not the same in this respect, and we do not treat them as though they were. [Insert source: adopted code editions and local amendments for Elgin and Kane County]
Office hours and 24-hour emergency call-out
Office hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 17:00, with Sunday closed. Emergency call-out is a separate service available 24 hours a day, including Sundays and holidays, for doors that have failed, been forced, or will not secure.
Call (224) 833-4828 or (262) 277-9190, or email info@accuratecommercialdoors.com. Commercial work on an entrance that cannot be closed during trading hours is scheduled around that, including evenings and Saturdays.
